We can’t believe it’s almost the end of the summer holidays!
With around 10 days left how are you all about the return to school? We know that for some families they will be looking forward to it but for others it may bring feelings of anxiety or dread.
So here are five of our tips: (if you have any tips please do comment and share them!)
– if your child travels on school transport, contact your transport company and ask for a meet and greet with the driver and escort. Have a conversation with the escort about the things your child needs, for instance mine like to not be talked to at all.
– if you weren’t able to meet your child’s new teacher and have conversations with them before the summer, or if things have changed, ask for a meeting with them early in September. If there is anything that is urgent send an email to the school- remember most schools have at least one teacher training day before the children start.
– prepare all the school uniform, do you need to cut out tags and labels? Do you need to wash the uniform a few times so it’s soft and smells like their usual clothes? Does your child need to wear their shoes for a few days to get used to them?
– prepare a little bag/pencil case with sensory items/fidgets for your child at school. (Make sure these are labelled) does your child need ear defenders for school?
(Remember ear defenders and fidgets/sensory toys are reasonable adjustments)
– talk to your child, make sure they know the start of school is coming up, are there any things they want to do before going back to school? Are there any things that they are worried about re going back to school- asking now gives you time to get answers from school if necessary, or put some strategies in place to help.
